What is Wellness?
Wellness is something that can be defined in many ways.
Several years ago, I read a book call Flow The Psychology of Optimal Experience by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi that discussed creating moments in our life where we are totally immersed or experiencing “Flow.”
When I played basketball growing up, we used the term “in the zone” when you were performing at this optimal level.
It was as if you were Superman and could not be stopped.
The basket seemed huge and the ball went in wherever you shot it.
It felt like nothing could faze you and you were completely immersed in the experience.
These types of moments not only happen on the basketball court, but in other areas of our lives.
We have those deep conversations with others that last all night or we go to work and time disappears.
It seems to mean that these “flow” experiences have a big part in being well.
As I walk by a park, I see youth playing sports, laughing, chasing each other, not having a care in the world.
The innocence to the demands of the daily grind, allow them to be free.
I believe observing these youth teach us the way to wellness.
I would define Wellness as submersing ourselves in things that make us feel alive through things like becoming the best person we can become, loving the people around us, doing meaningful work, spirituality, improving physical health, and developing talents.
